iPhone 7 Camera FAQ: Everything you need to know!

Getting familiar with the latest iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus camera updates, one feature – and two camera lenses!– at a time.

The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are set to have plenty of innovative new features, but the new camera design comes with some pretty far-out new things depending on the model you end up picking up.

From dual cameras with flawless telephoto capabilities, to a 7-megapixel FaceTime HD Camera for selfies and FaceTime calls, and much more, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus' cameras are exceeding all expectations.

"This is the best camera ever made in any smartphone… It allows [customers] to create beautiful pictures with beautiful, creative tools."

Here's absolutely everything you need to know about the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus' camera before you decide which iPhone 7 model to buy.

So what's new with the camera?

Plenty of stuff – the most impressive being an all new dual-lens camera for the iPhone 7 Plus with one wide angle lens and one telephoto lens that shoot as one for high-res optical zoom; four dual-LED flashes on the rear camera that put out 50% more light (and can change LED flashes to warm and cool colors); and a quality bump for the front facing camera from 5MP to 7MP.

Another new feature for the iPhone 7 Plus, specifically, is the portrait option that will be displayed alongside your panorama and slow-mo options on your camera.

The portrait option works specifically with depth of field and can be generated in real time, something a DSLR or more expensive camera cannot do. When you take a picture, you can use an ISP to scan the screen and create a depth map to keep the people in the front sharp and in focus and the background slightly blurred to give an almost 3D, professional tweak to your photo.

This software will be free and available for all iPhone 7 Plus users.

What's so great about a dual camera?

"This is what we're doing for the iPhone 7 Plus – It's plus a second camera."

The dual camera for the iPhone 7 Plus comes with two lenses – a telephoto and a wide angle lens. Because of this, zooming in on images will no longer distort and ruin the photo quality. Rather, users will now have more creative control on cropping, shooting, and zooming with videos or photos with their iPhone 7 Plus.

A new zoom button can be tapped to zoom in on your photo as you capture it. If you continue to use the telephoto lens and go beyond 2x, you begin to use software zoom.

TLDR; you can zoom clearly up to 10x without sacrificing the quality of your photos!

Is the image quality any better?

In short: YES! Image quality is going to be next-level amazing with the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus!

New flicker sensors read the lighting in a room for the perfect picture, while the image signal processor enables the highest quality in iPhone photos as it has twice the throughput of previous versions; the first thing it does is read the scene to look for objects, people, and bodies in your photo, then it automatically sets focus, exposure, noise reduction, contrast, and more. It'll even fuse together multiple photos to get you the perfect snapshot.

The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus also allow users the opportunities to capture RAW files and they can also employ wide color capture API, making the new iPhone models a photographer's dream.

"The iPhone is going to be a part of any professional's repertoire of tools. The camera didn't just handle low light, it rendered the separation of colors in a way that reminds me of film. Just beautiful." – Professional photographer Christopher Anderson/Magnum Photos

With the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus' new camera upgrades and technology, every time you shoot a photo, your iPhone performs 100 billion operations in around 25 milliseconds, making it the most advanced smartphone camera available to date.

Is there a difference between iPhone camera sizes?

There's not just a difference, but a whole 'nother camera!

The iPhone 7 comes with a camera that's slightly larger than the iPhone 6s' design, while the iPhone 7 Plus comes with two, side-by-side cameras.

Any software improvements?

On top of rolling out higher storage capacities (seriously, my iPhone is almost at its bursting limit with photos), the camera has a few specific software upgrades.

The camera itself is now 60% faster and 30% more energy efficient with a flicker sensor to read the perfect lighting in the room. Serious photographers can now capture RAW DND files if they choose and use this setting with the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus' high-speed sensor.

Depth of field is also a new concept that's being played with with the iPhone 7 Plus' camera. When you take pictures, you now have the option to shoot with a specific portrait setting that will be found amongst the time-lapse and square photo options. This will add a crisp, clear effect to the front portion of your photo, while blurring the background, similar to what a professional DSLR camera can do.

"I love the depth of field capabilities and the ability to shoot fast without losing sharpness. This iPhone proves you don't need a five figure rig to be a great photographer. This camera is gonna change the game." – Professional photographer Jason Nocito.

What's new with the front facing camera?

If you're looking to take selfies or make FaceTime calls with your front camera, never fear – the front camera got quite a boost, too!

You can now capture your memories in 7MP quality with new pixel technologies that use deep trench isolation for much more detailed, clear photos and automatic stabilization.

Is it worth it to get the iPhone 7 Plus because of the dual camera?

In our opinion yes, yes it absolutely is.
