How to rearrange, force quit, and delete apps on the Apple TV

Here’s how to move apps to your Top Shelf, force quit problematic apps, and delete third-party apps taking up extra space.

The fourth-generation Apple TV supports third-party apps, allowing you to watch movies, play games, browse recipes, and a lot more. But with all those available apps, you’re going to want some way of organizing them—and deleting the ones that take up too much space.

How to rearrange apps on the Apple TV

  1. Use the Siri Remote’s touchpad to select an app icon, then click and hold on the icon. (On a third-party controller, use the D-pad to select an icon, then press and hold A.)
  2. When the icon starts to jiggle, release your finger (or the A button) and use the touchpad (or the D-pad) to move the app around your Home screen.
  3. When you’re happy with its new location, click (or press A) again to exit Edit mode.

How to force quit an app on the Apple TV

  1. Press the Home button to return to the Home screen of your Apple TV.
  2. Double-press the Home button to enter multitasking mode. (There doesn’t appear to be a button that maps to Home on third-party controllers.)
  3. Swipe left or right to select the app in question.
  4. Swipe up to force quit the app.
  5. Press the Home button again to return to the Home screen.

How to view how much storage space an app is taking up

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to General > Manage Storage.
  3. Here you can view all the apps you currently have installed, sorted by most storage used to least storage used. You can also delete any app from this screen by pressing on the Trash icon.

How to delete an app from your Apple TV

  1. Use the Siri Remote’s touchpad to select an app icon, then click and hold on the icon. (On a third-party controller, use the D-pad to select an icon, then press and hold A.)
  2. Press the Play/Pause button (X on a third-party controller).
  3. Press Delete.

Asphalt 8: Airborne is the first of several Gameloft games coming to new Apple TV

The new Apple TV set-top box is being promoted as a gaming machine, and well-known publisher Gameloft plans to release several of its popular mobile titles to work with the new device. It begins with the launch of the arcade racing game Asphalt 8: Airborne for the new Apple TV.

Gameloft says that the Apple TV version of Asphalt 8 will include ”exceptional graphics and sophisticated visual effects”. It adds:

Races in Asphalt 8: Airborne will be even more heart-pounding thanks to the accelerometer built into the Siri Remote, allowing players to turn corners at full speed. The integrated Game Center features will give players the option to sync their iPhone, iPod touch or iPad game progress.

Gameloft’s next Apple TV game will be Dungeon Hunter, which will be released sometime next week. Over the coming weeks and months, more Gameloft titles will be added to the new Apple TV, including Dragon Mania Legends, Gangstar Vegas, Modern Combat 5: Blackout, My Little Pony – Friendship is Magic, Siegefall, Trivial Pursuit & Friends and UNO & Friends.

Apple TV: The ultimate guide

Welcome to your new set-top box.

The fourth-generation Apple TV is here. It brings Siri, third-party apps and game controllers, a new Home screen, Apple Music, and so much more to your television. Here’s everything you need to know to get started.

If you want a quick guide on getting your Apple TV up and running, we’ve got walkthroughs for setting up your set top box with either your iOS device, or manually.

Meet the new Apple TV

Apple’s new set-top box retains the sleek black look of its predecessor—albeit with a few changes. It’s a thicker, taller box now, omitting its digital audio out port in favor of a single HDMI port, power cable, Ethernet port, and USB-C service port.

Inside that midnight shell, the Apple TV packs some impressive hardware, a neat new remote, and great new software.

Hardware

Internally, the new Apple TV has gotten a major upgrade since its last update in 2012: It now sports a 64-bit A8 processor with 2GB of RAM, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, and 32GB or 6…

How to set up multiple accounts on your new Apple TV

More than one person using the Apple TV? Set up multiple accounts!

Since the new Apple TV is meant for rooms—family rooms, classrooms, meeting rooms—it needs to support more than one person. That means it needs to support more than one Apple ID (iTunes/App Store account) at a time. And it does! It may not be as smooth or as powerful as multiuser on the Mac, but it’s more than we’ve had on any iPhone or iPad to date. Here’s how it works!

How to add multiple accounts to Apple TV

Before you can use multiple accounts, you need to log into any and all additional accounts you want available.

  1. Launch Settings from your Home screen.
  2. Click on Accounts.
  3. Click on iTunes and App Store.
  4. Click on Add new Apple ID.
  5. Enter the additional Apple ID username.
  6. Click on Continue.
  7. Enter the additional Apple ID password.
  8. Click on Sign In.

How to switch between multiple accounts on Apple TV

While you have multiple accounts you can only use one account at a time. That means switching!

  1. Launch Settings from your Home screen.
  2. Click on Accounts.
  3. Click on iTunes and App Store.
  4. Click on the account you want to use.

You’ll now be able to download or re-download any apps or content available on that account.

Family Sharing

Multiple accounts work with Family Sharing, so kids can switch to their accounts and ”ask to buy” just like on iPhone or iPad.

How to use your Apple TV Remote to control your TV

Want your Siri Remote to turn on your TV and control volume? Here’s how.

The fourth-generation Apple TV comes with the Bluetooth 4.1-connected Siri Remote. Not only does it have some fancy functions when it comes to Apple’s new set top box, but it can also control your television’s power and volume, and if you have a TV that’s HDMI-CEC-compliant, it can automatically switch inputs, too.

If your television supports HDMI-CEC (HDMI Consumer Electronics Control), you should be able to automatically control power, inputs, and volume after setting up your Apple TV. I’ve had mixed luck with this in my real-world testing—I can control power and volume, but haven’t gotten input-switching to work.

If you’re using an older TV, or your Apple TV didn’t automatically set up your remote for you, you’ll have to teach your TV how to recognize it.

  1. Go to Settings > Remotes and Devices.
  2. Under Home Theater Control, enable Turn On Your TV with Your Remote.

  3. Go to Volume Control.
  4. If the options are available, you can select Auto or TV via IR. If not, click Learn New Device to map your Siri Remote to your television.
