Apple sets App Store review downtime for December 23-27

It’s that time of year once again when app review gets ready to close for the holidays.

As they have in past years, Apple has let developers know that the App Store will not be accepting new app updates for a few days this holiday season, with this year’s downtime scheduled for December 23 through 27. Developers are encouraged to submit any updates well in advance of that time period to make sure that customers can get them before the holidays.

From Apple:

The busiest season on the App Store is almost here. Make sure your apps are up-to-date and ready for the winter holidays. New apps and app updates will not be accepted December 23 to 27 (Pacific Time), so any releases should be submitted, approved, and scheduled in advance. Other iTunes Connect and developer account features will remain available.

Apple apparently preparing refund program for certain iMac hinge repairs

If you’ve had your iMac’s hinge repaired by Apple, you might be entitled to a refund.

Apple will apparently start refunding customers who had previously paid for repairs to the display hinge of their iMac. An issue affecting iMacs shipped between December 2012 and July 2014 could cause the display to stop adjusting properly and tilt forward, with repairs often costing around $100.

This information comes from an apparent internal service document, obtained by MacRumors:

Unlike some of Apple’s other Exchange and Repair Extension Programs listed on its website, the details of this program have not been made publicly available. Apple has instead sent internal communication to Apple Authorized Service Providers with information about repairs and refunds.

Since Apple hasn’t made details of this program public, you might want to try contacting Apple Support for help if your iMac is among the eligible models.

How to make the function keys the default Touch Bar display

If you know you’ll need the function keys a lot in a specific app, you can set them as the default Touch Bar display!

The Touch Bar on the MacBook Pro replaces the traditional row of function keys on the keyboard. To access the function keys temporarily, simply press the fn key, which is the bottom leftmost key on the keyboard. You can then tap F1 – F12 as needed.

Additionally, if you installed Windows on your Mac using Boot Camp, the Touch Bar will automatically default to the function keys while you are in Windows.

You can also manually specify which apps you want to display the function keys by default while you are using them. Here’s how.

How to make the function keys the default display for specific apps on the Touch Bar

You can open the Keyboard section by searching in Spotlight. Or, manually open it via System Preferences.

Note: Some apps may not support this feature. It’s up to developers.

Click on the Apple menu logo in the upper left corner of the screen.
Click on Sy…
