Pocket Casts gets a new look, iPad multitasking, and much more

Popular podcast app Pocket Casts has received a long-awaited update for iPhone and iPad. Pocket Casts 6.0 brings with it a refined look and feel, new audio-enhancing features, and iPad multitasking support in iOS 9, among other things.

One of the big changes that developer Shifty Jelly has made was to re-write large portions of the app in Apple’s Swift programming language. Because of this, Pocket Casts has seen substantial stability improvements, along with faster performance.

On the iPad, Pocket Casts now supports Split View and Slide Over multitasking, letting you control your podcast listening while you do other things. For video podcasts, the app has also added support for picture-in-picture, letting the video window float in the foreground of your display as you use other apps.

There are other improvements as well. Pocket Casts now has its own dark mode, and a dedicated download section. Your Up Next list is now easier to manage, episodes can now be filtered by date, and i…

Amazon launches its Dash grocery scanner in the UK to help you order stuff

Amazon has launched its Dash grocery scanner in the UK to help consumers quickly and conveniently add items to their basket for easy checkout by scanning barcodes. Once the items have been added, all that’s required is to complete the checkout process on a PC or using one of the official Amazon mobile apps.

As noted in Engadget’s report, should two Amazon Fresh orders be completed before August 28, the Dash can be delivered for free. For those who don’t, it’ll set them back £35. There’s also voice support, in case you’d rather say what you wish to have ordered, as opposed to messing around with scanning individual products.

All we need now are the Dash buttons so we can maintain an unhealthy supply of Monster energy drink.

iPhone 7 pre-orders rumored to kick off on Sept. 9

It looks like the iPhone 7 will be unveiled in the first week of September. Noted leaker Evan Blass posted on Twitter that the upcoming iPhone will go up for pre-order from September 9, with an earlier tweet stating that the phone will release on September 12.

Confirmed: Pre-orders start on the 9th. You can extrapolate the launch event date from there. https://t.co/gwoPzIM1dI— Evan Blass (@evleaks) July 28, 2016

If Apple sticks to its timeline, we may see the iPhone 7 announcement on September 6 or 7. Last year, the iPhone 6s was announced on September 9, a Wednesday, with the phone going up for pre-order three days later on September 12.

As for the device itself, rumors suggest that the iPhone 7 will eschew the 3.5mm audio jack for Lightning audio, along with upgraded internals and a larger camera unit.

Apple announces 1 billion iPhones sold

Apple has announced that it has now sold one billion iPhones in the lifetime of the product. The company announced the milestone at a company meeting on Wednesday morning.

From Apple:

”iPhone has become one of the most important, world-changing and successful products in history. It’s become more than a constant companion. iPhone is truly an essential part of our daily life and enables much of what we do throughout the day,” said Cook. ”Last week we passed another major milestone when we sold the billionth iPhone. We never set out to make the most, but we’ve always set out to make the best products that make a difference. Thank you to everyone at Apple for helping change the world every day.”

To give this number some context, it took 27 years for one billion PCs to be sold. Disney welcomed the one billionth visitor to its theme parks after 49 years of operation, and it was 131 years before there were one billion cars driving across roads across the world.
