Read this if you’re thinking about canceling an AT&T service soon

DirecTV Now and AT&T Wireless accounts aren’t affected, though.

Here’s a decently big heads up to anyone looking to cancel DirecTV and switch to … well, pretty much anything else. (That includes, of course, any of the number of flavors of streaming video.) Starting Jan. 14, 2019, AT&T no longer will prorate your bill if you cancel one of several services before the end of your billing cycle. The good news is that you’ll still keep the service through the end of the billing cycle — you just won’t be saving any money.

The new policy affects those canceling service from DirecTV, U-Verse TV, AT&T Phone, AT&T Internet, and Fixed Wireless Internet. Do note that the new policy does not affect AT&T Wireless — your cell phone — or DirecTV Now, the streaming TV arm of things. (The new policy also brings AT&T’s in line with some of its competitors.)

Here’s the not-so-fine print:

We bill in advance for DIRECTV, U-verse® TV, AT…

How to quickly track your flights in iMessage for iPhone, iPad, and Mac

Did you know you can track flights directly in iMessage? You need only the airline name and flight number.

When I was a kid, we’d fly one or two times a year to Canada to visit my relatives; one trip, during a particularly eventful snow delay, I got a chance to look at flight path estimators and was completely hooked.

These days, you can preview flight paths right from your iPhone or Mac — no cumbersome CRT monitor or terribly-designed FAA flight graph required. Apple built flight tracking directly into the Messages app: You need only the airline name and number to find out the status of the flight.

In the flight tracking window, you’ll be able to see the plane’s current status on an interactive map (which you can pan and zoom), flight number, current status, terminal departure and arrival gates, and times of departure/estimated arrival along with any delays.

Note: Messages’ flight tracking is primarily designed for flights taking off within 24 hours; as such, you can’…

The Yi Compact dash cam has 1080p, night vision, and more for just $25

Get everything on tape. Or SD card, I guess.

The Yi Compact 1080p dashboard camera is down to $25 on Amazon once you clip the $15 off on-page coupon. We’ve seen this dash cam go on sale a couple times but not for a while now, and the last deal only dropped it to $26. It regularly sells for $40.

The Yi Compact came out around the end of last year, but it’s right in line with the other Yi dash cameras as great budget alternatives to far-more-expensive options like the Garmin 65W. With this camera, you get 1080p at 30 frames per second, a 130-degree wide angle lens, and night vision. It has a 2.7-inch LCD screen with easy-to-use navigation. The built-in Wi-Fi lets you connect to the smartphone app that lets you download and share videos. Users give it 3.7 stars based on 383 reviews.

You will need an SD card to record your footage onto, so it’s a good thing Samsung’s Evo Select microSD cards are still down to crazy low prices.

Keep your web browsing activities to yourself on macOS Mojave

If you’re using Safari, you probably already know that it’s the fastest web browser for the Mac. Even with all that speed, it’s worthwhile to slow down a bit and make your web surfing experience safer.

Apple continues to add new features to Safari on a regular basis to try to make our web browsing experience faster, easier, and—above all—more secure.

You can open up a private browser window anytime you want in Safari’s file menu and Safari won’t save your browsing history and will ask websites you visit not to track you. But there are a few more steps you might want to consider taking.

The place to go for most of these things is in Safari’s preferences window, accessed from the Safari menu.

How to guard against unsafe files
How to identify fraudulent websites
How to disable JavaScript
How to prevent cross-site tracking
How to block all cookies in Safari
How to remove website data

Netgear’s new Arlo Ultra security camera will monitor your home in 4K

4K, HDR, Spotlight, Sirens… talk about home security.

Netgear has announced the Arlo Ultra, a 4K HDR wireless security camera that looks to be a serious upgrade over the Arlo Pro 2. The biggest upgrade is in the resolution. This is Netgear’s first Arlo security camera to have 4K resolution and HDR image processing. Netgear believes users will be able to use the resolution to pick up on critical details they may have otherwise missed, like license plate numbers or clothing, when identifying suspicious activity.

The camera will also come with a 180-degree field of view, automatic zoom and tracking, dual microphones, and more. The Ultra finally has a spotlight integrated into it. Previously, you had to buy the Arlo Smart Home Security Light and sync it with your system. Other features include color night vision and custom activity zones you can set yourself. The two-way audio includes advanced noise cancellation to minimize background noise and allow clear, natural conversations from…
