LG UltraFine 5K review: It’s good but it’s not Apple

There’s a brand new 5K resolution, P3 color gamut display for the MacBook Pro. It’s LG-branded, not Apple — but is it any good?

When Apple debuted the latest generation MacBook Pro back in October, 2016, they debuted a new 27-inch 5K display along with it. It wasn’t just high-density ”Retina” quality either, it was wide color, able to show the same DCI-P3 gamut that digital cinema uses. It was everything everyone waiting on a new Mac display had been waiting for. Except for one thing — it was LG designed and branded, not Apple.

That’s not to say Apple didn’t have a lot to do with the engineering — everything that makes it work so well with a MacBook Pro using just one Thunderbolt 3 ca…

How to shoot 360-degree video with Periscope

Can I seriously Periscope live in 360-degrees?!

This week, Twitter announced that it will begin to support 360-degree video streaming with Periscope. This means that you don’t only have to broadcast live, but you can show off a 360-degree feed of wherever you are, too!

As with streaming live video via Periscope through Twitter, there will be a ”Live 360” badge available. From there, if you want to watch the video, you can tilt your phone or drag your finger around the screen like standard 360° videos online.

Cool! Can I start 360-degree live streaming on my own account yet?

Unfortunately, no. Not all users have access to live streaming, but you can view any and all live 360 videos that appear on your Twitter feed.

Is it just for Twitter on my smartphone?

Nope! 360-degree video is available for desktop as well, although the support isn’t particularly great. (If you’re looking to watch your 360-degree videos on Safari, for example, then you’re kind of SOL.)

What can I use …

How To Use AirPods to Control Your HomeKit Home

Apple’s new bluetooth headphones make HomeKit and home automation about ten times more awesome!

I knew I’d be getting AirPods the moment Apple announced them — not because they were something I desperately wanted, but because — as the latest, greatest gadget to come outta Cupertino — I felt it was important to have them, to use them, and to understand them.

When I opened the box and pulled out the device(s), I was pleasantly surprised by the floss-sized capsule. See, there’s something about Apple product photography that has always fooled my brain into thinking the products are going to be larger than they actually are. The same thing happened with Apple Watch — in fact, when I opened my Apple Watch I was all but convinced I’d ordered the wrong size! … OK, I’ll save you from any further digression.

AirPods, aka HomeKit Command Central

I didn’t realize it at first, but AirPods make my home-automation-loving heart a very happy camper. Why? Think abo…

Apple could start manufacturing iPhones in Bangalore from April 2017

iPhones could be manufactured in Bangalore from next year.

Apple is getting serious about manufacturing iPhones locally in India. The company has filed a request to the government for a single-brand retail license, which would allow it to sell products online and open retail stores in the country. Alongside its retail ambitions, Apple is also looking to set up manufacturing in the country.

Local manufacturing will allow Apple to price its products more competitively. Currently, all imported goods attract a 12.5% duty, and as such it makes sense for the company to explore local options. Accrordong to unnamed sources speaking to The Times of India, Apple is ”very serious” anout local manufacturing, with local assembly set to kick off as early as April 2017.

Foxconn is investing in several factories in India, but the company is also collaborating with the likes of Xiaomi and OnePlus for local production. As such, it looks like Apple will start local operations with Wistron, a Taiwa…

Best Indie Games for iPhone and iPad

Home for the holidays with nothing to do? These games are worth your time.

Over the years, I’ve played many games on my iPhone and iPad — top-tier titles, puzzlers, RPGs, and even a Pokémon-themed game or two — but the ones that captured my heart and playtime were often the tiny titles. These games may not have been from top game studios, but they brought heart, wit, and charm to my iPhone or iPad.

As we close out the year, I wanted to compile a list of my all-time favorite indie games on iOS: Some are no doubt familiar to you, while others might be a little more obscure, but I recommend you try them all.

Threes

The matching game that started a 2048-clone phenomenon, Threes brought smarts (and some great background music) to the puzzling genre.

Threes may be a game comprised of numbers, but you need no real mathematical skill to excel at this game — just an open mind and a penchant for thinking ahead.

Best of all, you can always fi…

How China built a city to build iPhones

Hundreds of millions of iPhones have been produced in China to date. It’s a scale that was unimaginable just a decade ago and is now almost taken for granted, as is the situation in which they’re produced.

The New York Times

It all centers on Zhengzhou, a city of six million people in an impoverished region of China. Running at full tilt, the factory here, owned and operated by Apple’s manufacturing partner Foxconn, can produce 500,000 iPhones a day. Locals now refer to Zhengzhou as ”iPhone City.”

The local government has proved instrumental, doling out more than $1.5 billion to Foxconn to build large sections of the factory and nearby employee housing. It paved roads and built power plants.

It helps cover continuing energy and transportation costs for the operation. It recruits workers for the assembly line. It pays bonuses to the factory for meeting export targets.

All of it in support of iPhone production.

There’s been a lot of talk about the cost of iPhone pro…
