iOS 12 wish list: Apple TV Express

Apple TV Express could plug in, power on, and get anything from your iPhone, iPad, or Mac up onto your television.

Nintendo Switch lets you game like a console in your living room, then pick up and take your gaming on the go. Instead of an Apple TV — or NES! — box, it’s more like an iPad that can dock to your TV for room-filling fun. Google’s Chromecast achieves something similar but in an entirely different way: through a dongle rather than a dock. Even Amazon’s latest Fire TV isn’t much more than a dongle.

There’s a lot to recommend Apple TV 4K’s dedicated device approach, including separate local storage, incredible hardware power, and updates that won’t depend on big media houses supporting hundreds of different ”smart-TV” platforms. But what if we could have the best of all worlds?

Last year I traveled a lot to do training for some of our new writers. In one of the offices, we had two old-school Apple TVs attached to two big screens on opposite sides of the buil…

Amazon’s giving out free $5 credits for activating a Music Unlimited trial

Free money?! Sign me up.

Get a free $5 promo credit to be used on anything sold and shipped by Amazon when you sign up for a free 30-day trial of Music Unlimited after entering promo code MUSIC5.

Amazon has learned their lesson from the last deal and added a few caveats to this one. First, this deal only applies to new subscribers. If you caught the last deal or have signed up for Amazon Music Unlimited before, you won’t be eligible. Second, you need to be a Prime member. Third, you won’t be able to create a bunch of new accounts for this promo because the accounts have to be older than October 1.

If you didn’t already see, Amazon just announced a slate of new Echo and Fire TV products which are currently available to pre-order at a discount! Your promotional credit can be applied to any of those, like the new Echo Spot.

Use the credit to get discounts on video games. Get Destiny 2 for $42 or Cuphead for $15.

Once signed up, you can immediately change (or cancel) your subscripti…

Twitter says Russia Today bought $274K in ads to target US market in 2016 election

Today Twitter released information in response to queries and concerns regarding Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election, and stated that it is ”in dialogue with congressional committees” in order to aid in the investigation.

In a post published on Twitter’s official blog today, the company continued the discussion of their approach to bots and misinformation that they started earlier this summer. This time, though, Twitter’s Public Policy team focused more on their findings with respect to Russian attempts to undermine the democratic process.

The company said that it discovered upwards of 200 Twitter accounts affiliated with the Russian government, and three of those, which are connected to news site Russia Today, had purchased a multitude of ads targeted at the U.S. market in 2016:

Today we proactively shared with committee staff a round-up of ads that three RT accounts (@RT_com, @RT_America, and @ActualidadRT) targeted to the U.S. market in 2016. As of our meetings to…

Not getting stand reminders in watchOS 4? Here’s the fix!

If your stand reminders have suddenly gone silent after upgrading to watchOS 4, check this setting.

Earlier this week, The Iconfactory’s Craig Hockenberry noticed something odd after upgrading to watchOS 4:

I’m not getting stand reminders since installing watchOS 4 – it’s on in Settings and I restarted watch. Anyone else?— Craig Hockenberry (@chockenberry) September 27, 2017

His tweet got me thinking about all the stand reminders I’ve missed since upgrading my Apple Watch. Initially, I’d thought that my lack of regular reminders was somehow part of watchOS 4’s intelligent coaching system — that it’d somehow gotten trained on a few weeks of insane non-stop writing where I didn’t leave my desk and decided I no longer wanted standing goals in my life. (It would have been a fair assessment.)

But no: It turns out the culprit is something far more reasonable. From what Hockenberry discovered, it looks as though anyone who hasn’t yet set wheelchair Activity settings when upg…

There’s no ’FM radio’ in your iPhone for Apple to magically turn on

In the face of unprecedented natural disaster, politicians are once again calling on Apple and others to enable the FM radio feature in modern smartphones. Unfortunately, they aren’t looking into the technology first.

In the wake of the devastation wrought by recent hurricanes and earthquakes, politicians in the U.S. are calling for Apple and other manufacturers to turn on the FM radios that they presume are lying dormant in iPhones and other phones. I really wish — and I suspect Apple and other manufacturers really wish — it was that as simple. But it’s not. And, unfortunately, politicians aren’t often well versed in technology, and they often don’t ask before they soundbite.

Apple provided me with the following statement on the issue:

”Apple cares deeply about the safety of our users, especially during times of crisis and that’s why we have engineered modern safety solutions into our products,” Apple told iMore. ”Users can dial emergency services and access Medica…

Annapurna brings soothing game ’Flower’ to the App Store

Developer thatgamecompany’s award-winning PS3 game just dropped on Apple’s App Store, so if you’re searching for a moment of peace, you should consider downloading it ASAP.

Flower for iOS, which Touch Arcade was the first to spot, is an extremely calming game in which you harness the power of the wind to guide flower petals through vibrant, beautifully designed environments. The only real object is to collect more petals. Perhaps more importantly than that, though, players are encouraged to explore and interact with the surroundings in the game at their own pace, immersing themselves in the super captivating and meditative sensory experience. In Flower, there’s no text or dialogue to read, and no real ”messing up” — it’s all about the journey.

Flower is almost completely tilt-controlled, meaning that it’s really intuitive and easy to play (even for people like me who have serious trouble steering). It’s definitely the sort of game that was created to be enjoyed by ev…

1Password is a great password manager that iOS 11 has made even better. With the app’s latest update, you can now drag and drop usernames, passwords, and more from 1Password into the targeted app or webpage you’re trying to login to. This pairs well with 1Password’s existing support for iOS’s Slide Over multitasking feature, allowing you to slide the 1Password window over, get the login information you need, then slide it away when it’s usefulness has ended.
