Augmented reality is going to be lit with Niantic’s acquisition of 6D.ai

Niantic’s acquisition of 6d.ai just opened up a whole new world for AR experiences.

Niantic, the developers behind the wildly popular Pokémon Go, has announced the acquisition of 6D.ai today. If you’ve never heard of 6D.ai before today, it’s okay — neither have I, honestly. But that changes today.

For the uninitiated, 6D.ai started in 2017 from Oxford University’s Active Vision Lab. The purpose of 6d.ai is to build computer vision-based technologies to solve augmented reality issues, like 3D construction, for example. Together with Niantic, the goal is to create a dynamic, 3D map of the world to build new, planet-scale AR experiences. This is quite exciting, even if you aren’t into Pokémon Go. This is the future of AR.

Personally, I stopped playing Pokémon Go a while ago. I can’t even remember when the last time I played it ”seriously” was. I think it was about the time Harry Potter: Wizards Unite came out, but hey guess what, I’ve kind of stopped playing that too. But that d…

Apple buys popular weather app, Dark Sky — Android app will shut down

What you need to know

Apple has purchased Dark Sky.
The iOS app will remain unaffected for the time being.
The Android app is no longer available for download and will shut down on July 1, 2020.

Dark Sky is an immensely popular weather app for local weather, and in a blog post released today, Dark Sky announced it’s joining Apple.

”Our goal has always been to provide the world with the best weather information possible, to help as many people as we can stay dry and safe, and to do so in a way that respects your privacy. There is no better place to accomplish these goals than at Apple. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to reach far more people, with far more impact, than we ever could alone.”

Dark Sky’s hyper-local forecasts have been available on iOS and Android for years now, but with this recent acquisition, there are changes afoot.

The iOS app will remain unaffected for now and continue to be available for download; however, the Android app will not be so lucky.

This Android expert agrees iPhones are best for working from home

Of course, iOS is better than Android. A Pixel 4 guru agrees

Working from home has become the norm for millions of hard-working employees around the world. For those new to the work from home concept, you might be wondering which is the best mobile solution, iOS, or Android. Over at our sister site Android Central, Joe Maring has come to a conclusion long embraced by Apple users. It’s iOS and iPadOS over Android, of course.

There are lots of reasons Apple’s mobile devices best their Android counterparts in this regard. Though often criticized by non-Apple users, it’s the company’s ”walled-garden of an ecosystem” approach that positively differentiates the two, according to Maring.

His favorite Apple tools are the Universal Clipboard and Handoff. The former makes it possible to copy something on your mobile device and paste it on your Mac, and vice versa, while the latter lets you start a task on one machine and finish it on another.

Maring also focuses on select third-party apps …

Apple releases tvOS 13.4.5 beta 1 for developers

Installing the tvOS 13.4.5 beta is more complex than an iOS or macOS beta, but it’s also for developers only.

Just like with iOS and macOS, Apple makes beta versions of tvOS available for developers to test. But unlike the betas for other systems, installing it on the Apple TV (4th generation) or Apple TV 4K is more complicated than a simple download and go. If you’re a developer and you’re having trouble getting the tvOS beta installed, here’s what you need to do.

Unlike Apple’s other operating systems, you can’t back up your Apple TV; as such, Apple offers two options for updating tvOS: over the air, which just updates the system; and via USB-C, which restores the device to its factory settings.

Apple occasionally offers updates to iOS, watchOS, tvOS, and macOS as closed developer previews or public betas for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Mac (sadly, no public beta for the Apple Watch). While the betas contain new features, they also contain pre-release bugs that can prevent the…

Apple releases iPadOS 13.4.5 developer beta 1

If you’re a developer looking to take a peek at iPadOS 13.3, here’s how to install the developer beta.

iPadOS 13.4 is on its way with new features that require third-party developer input. As such, the company is releasing developer betas so that software engineers can get a head start on making great software for you.

Apple occasionally offers updates to iOS, watchOS, tvOS, and macOS as closed developer previews or public betas for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Mac (sadly, no public beta for the Apple Watch). While the betas contain new features, they also contain pre-release bugs that can prevent the normal use of your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, or Mac, and are not intended for everyday use on a primary device. That’s why we strongly recommend staying away from developer previews unless you need them for software development, and using the public betas with caution. If you depend on your devices, wait for the final release.
