Mac owners have trouble using apps after security certificate snafu

Several Mac users have reported encountering issues with opening apps downloaded from the Mac App Store, with a number of apps reporting that they are "damaged". While some users are only reporting problems with one app, others still have trouble opening several. The culprit appears to be an expired security certificate for affected apps, as spotted by developer Paul Haddad:

Apple uses these certificates to make sure that software has been properly download from the App Store, and that malware using a legitimate developer credentials is not installed on a user's system. The company has now issued a new security certificate, this one not set to expire until early 2035. However, this has not fixed the problem for everyone. While many users simply needed to log back into the Mac App Store, other users have reported needing to re-download their apps in order for the fix to take effect.
