Apple reportedly acquires motion capture company Faceshift

Apple has reportedly acquired a Faceshift, a company known for its motion capture technology, which was used in the making of the latest Star Wars movie. The news was reported by TechCrunch earlier today:
TechCrunch has confirmed that Apple has snapped up Faceshift, a startup based in Zurich that has developed technology to create animated avatars and other figures that capture a person's facial expressions in real time.
While Apple didn't outright confirm the acquisition, it responded to TechCrunch with its standard statement about such deals:
Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.
The purpose behind the acquisition isn't entirely clear, but Faceshift's technology certainly has possible applications in the virtual reality space, and gaming in particular. And having already been used in Star Wars: The Force Awakens to make non-human characters more expressive, it's clear that Faceshift's motion capture technology has great potential for Apple.
