Apple reportedly working on new display tech at Taiwanese lab

Apple is reportedly working on some interesting new display tech in a "secret" new facility located in Taiwan. The report comes from Bloomberg, which notes that at least 50 engineers and workers are developing ways to make displays lighter and thinner at the Taiwan facility:
Apple began operating the lab this year as it aims to make products thinner, lighter, brighter and more energy-efficient. Engineers are developing more-advanced versions of the liquid-crystal displays currently used in iPhones, iPads and Mac personal computers, the people said. Apple also is keen to move to organic light-emitting diodes, which are even thinner and don't require a backlight, they said.
The report also notes that Apple has recruited employees from other local display manufacturers such as AU Optronics Corp. and Qualcomm Inc. to to conduct research.
In late November, it was reported that Apple may be looking to switch to an OLED display for the iPhone by 2018, so the company could very well be conducting research in that area in the new facility. Of course, there's no way of knowing for sure, but Apple may also be looking to ease its reliance on outside manufacturers, such as LG, for the displays in future products.
