How to stream music over AirPlay to Apple TV

Can't find an Apple TV app for the audio you want to listen to? No problem! Stream anything from your iPhone or iPad using AirPlay!

AirPlay makes it possible for you to directly stream video and audio content from your iPhone or iPad to your Apple TV. So, even though there aren't Apple TV apps for them yet, you can still listen to your favorite tunes on Google Play Music or Amazon Prime Music through your kickin' home entertainment sound system. All it takes is a few taps.

How to use Airplay compatible apps on Apple TV

There are a number of different apps and games that build AirPlay compatibility right into the media control. Some games allow you to use your iPhone as a controller; apps like myNoise feature Airplay audio that will also display images. Even YouTube has a direct AirPlay option from iPhone and iPad.

  1. Make sure your Apple TV is on.
  2. Open an AirPlay compatible app on your iPhone or iPad.
  3. Select content to play, like a song or video.
  4. Tap the AirPlay icon. It looks like a rectangle with an arrow point upward at the bottom of it.
  5. Select your Apple TV as the source.

To turn off AirPlay, go back to your Apple TV listing and select your iPhone or iPad instead.

How to use AirPlay in Control Center to send audio to Apple TV

Even if an app doesn't offer AirPlay built-in, you can almost always still access it via Control Center.

  1. Make sure your Apple TV is on.
  2. Open a music or sound app on your iPhone or iPad.
  3. Select content to play, like a song or soundscape.
  4. Swipe up from the bottom bezel of the screen to call up Control Center.
  5. Tap the AirPlay icon at the lower section of Control Center.
  6. Select your Apple TV as the source.

These steps will only send the audio of an app to your Apple TV. You can continue using Apple TV to view pictures and browse content, as long as you don't select any apps that include audio.

How to use AirPlay to mirror anything on your iPhone or iPad to Apple TV

Sometimes, you really just want to show off everything on your iPhone or iPad screen. With AirPlay mirroring, you can do that, too.

  1. Make sure that your Apple TV is on.
  2. Swipe up from the bottom bezel of the screen to call up Control Center on your iPhone or iPad.
  3. Tap the AirPlay icon at the lower section of Control Center.
  4. Select your Apple TV as the source.
  5. Toggle the Mirroring switch on.

Literally everything on your iPhone or iPad screen will appear on Apple TV, including text messages, notifications, in-app ads, your personal data. Keep that in mind when sharing your screen on Apple TV.
