How to update from an iOS beta to the official release

So, you've been running a beta version of iOS and now you want the real deal? Here's how to get back on the right track!

If you have been running a developer or public beta of iOS, you can officially move to the public release at any point once it's available. Apple may push the update to your device automatically, but you can manually download it if you prefer.

Before you start

I've mentioned this a lot, but can't stress it enough: Back up your iPhone before doing anything. A few extra minutes to secure your important data is worth the wait; you will regret losing your data if something goes wrong and you don't have a backup.

How to update to the public release of iOS over the beta version on your iPhone or iPad

On an iPhone or iPad

  1. Go to Settings > General > Profiles.
  2. Select the Beta profile.
  3. Remove the beta profile by pressing Delete Profile.
  4. Enter your passcode if prompted and press Delete once more.
  5. Shut off your iPhone or iPad by holding down the On/Off button and using the Slide to power off toggle.
  6. Restart your iPhone or iPad by holding down the On/Off button.

On a Mac

  1. Connect your iPhone or iPad to your computer.
  2. While your iPhone or iPad is connected, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. Do not release the buttons when you see the Apple logo. Keep holding until your iPhone or iPad enters recovery mode.
  3. Click on Update on your computer when prompted.
  4. Click on Update on your computer again to download and install the non-beta version of iOS.
  5. Click Agree on your computer to agree to the Terms and Conditions.

Your iPhone or iPad will then download the shipping version of iOS.
