Apple and IBM will help Japan Post check in on elderly customers with iPads

Mail and package delivery service Japan Post will electronically expand a program to check in on the elderly with the help of iPads.

Japan Post will utilize iPads and with specialized software with their check-in service as part of the Japanese expansion of Apple and IBM's MobileFirst partnership. The service, in which Japan Post employees check in on elderly customers, is currently offered to about 100 people for a small fee. By bringing iPads into the program, the company will be able to check in with more customers more often, hoping for an initial rollout to about 1,000 customers, according to The Wall Street Journal:

He said the company would conduct a pilot program starting later this year for six months, providing 1,000 iPads to older citizens free of charge. Starting in April 2016, the company aims to turn the program into a regular business, although details such as fees haven't been decided, the official said.

Japan Post plans to expand the program even further, reaching 4-5 million customers by 2020.

Apple and IBM announced that they were bringing their MobileFirst initiative into Japan last month. The partnership between the two companies originally began in 2014, aiming to improve how mobile devices and software work in enterprise.
