Apple Watch Series 4 – bigger, more heart rate sensors, and gold stainless!

Apple unveiled the fourth-generation Apple Watch today. Get all the details on your next Watch right here!

At the Sept. 12 press event, Apple unveiled its next-generation Apple Watch. If you think little has changed, you'd be wrong in a big way.

I heard there are new sizes

You heard correctly. Series 4 comes in 40mm and 44mm instead of previous models 38mm and 42mm. It's only a slight size increase but it makes that slim-bezel face we heard about earlier have even more real estate.

The larger case of the Apple Watch Series 4 measures 39.9mm wide for the smaller model and 45.2mm wide for the larger model. For comparison, the Series 3 Apple Watch measures 33.3mm wide and 35.9 wide.

So the display is even larger? How?

Thanks to the nearly edge-to-edge screen of the Series 4, not only is the actual face bigger, but the display is about 15% larger. That's more room for complications, web browsing, and all the awesome things that watchOS 5 brings with it. This, combined with the larger casing makes the Series 4 32-35% larger than its predecessor I bet you're thinking you need a new Apple Watch now.

If the cases are bigger, doesn't that mean the Series 4 won't fit my current Apple Watch bands?

Believe it or not, your current Apple Watch bands will fit the Series 4. Apple did us all a big favor and designed the new cases with a slight taper so the minuscule increase in physical size won't affect the band connections.

Now you're talking! So what colors does it come in?

Series 4 comes in the same colors that Series 3 does with one addition: gold stainless steel.

  • Silver aluminum
  • Space Gray aluminum
  • Gold aluminum
  • Stainless Steel
  • Space Black stainless steel
  • Gold stainless steel
  • Nike Edition silver aluminum
  • Nike Edition Space Gray aluminum

Is there still a cellular model?

There is! You can choose from Apple Watch GPS or Apple Watch GPS + Cellular

What about a Special Edition version? Any new materials?

Not this year. Apple didn't add a ceramic or gold-plated special edition to the Series 4 lineup. Looks like those fancy expensive models just aren't making the grade.

Is it faster? Does the battery last longer?

Series 4 now has a 64-bit dual core SiP (system-in-package) with up to 2X faster performance

It has an updated Exceleromotor and gyroscope that has 2x dynamic range up to 32 g-forces.

It also has the same 18-hour battery life with a full 6 hours of workout tracking.

What's this I hear about an ECG monitor?

Apple is doing more than ever to help everyday people monitor their health, hearts included. Apple Watch Series 4 has an electrocardiograph (ECG) so you can monitor your heartbeat and check for irregularities.

When you take an ECG using the ECG app, you'll place your finger on the Digital Crown. It will monitor the pulse of your heartrate.

Apple Watch has two more features to help you monitor your heart. It will send a notification if your heart rate appears to be too low. If its too low, it might not be pumping enough blood to your body. Apple Watch Series 4 can detect it.

Series 4 also screens your heart rhythm in the background and lets you know if it reads symptoms of Atrial fibrillation.

Recordings are stored in the Health app in a PDF that you can share with your doctor.

How much do I have to steal from my piggy bank for one of these

With all of these new features, of course the price has to go up. You can get the Apple Watch GPS Series 4 starting at $399. The Apple Watch GPS + Cellular Series 4 starts at $499.

Series 3 starts at $279 now and is available right after the event.

When, where, how (do I get one)?

You can preorder the Apple Watch Series 4 standard and Cellular on September 14. The cellular model will be available in stores starting September 21 in the US, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Puerto Rico, Switzerland and the UK.
