How to change the batteries in your Philips Hue Dimmer Switch

  1. Remove the Dimmer Switch from its cradle on the wall.
  2. Remove the battery compartment screw from the Dimmer Switch using a Phillips head screwdriver.
  3. Remove the battery compartment cover.
  4. Remove the current battery from the compartment and discard it.
  5. Place the new battery in the compartment.
  6. Place the battery compartment cover back on the Dimmer Switch.
  7. Put the screw for the battery compartment back into the Dimmer Switch.
  8. Place the Dimmer Switch back into its cradle on the wall. Or don't. You can, after all, use it as a remote.

If your battery replacement doesn't work right away, make sure that your Philips Hue Bridge, which is already required to use the Hue Dimmer Switch, is up to date with the latest firmware available. You should now be free to dim or brighten your lights as you see fit, using the Hue Dimmer Switch either as a wall switch or as a portable remote.

What you'll need

This is what you'll absolutely need to change the battery in a Philips Hue Dimmer Switch. In addition to having the Dimmer Switch itself, you'll also need a single CR2450 coin battery.

The Dimmer Switch

A dimmer switch that's also a portable remote

The Hue Dimmer Switch is easy to use and can be paired with multiple Philips Hue lights. You can mount it to your wall without any additional wiring to use it as a wall switch for your lights, or carry around the controls to use it as a remote.

The Hue Dimmer Switch is simpler control compared to the Hue Tap switch and isn't able to set scenes. However, it's great for dimming your lights and turning them on and off. It's also half the price of the Tap switch.

The battery

The replacement battery that you'll need.

The Hue Dimmer Switch runs on a single 3V CR2450 coin battery, so you'll need one of those to replace the one that comes with the switch.

CR2450 batteries are easy to find and cheap to pick up. You can get your hands on one for under $10 at Amazon.

Additional Equipment

You might need to pick up a specific tool if you don't have one already.
