Hive’s newest security camera is designed to brave the outdoors

Form and function.

Hive has opened pre-orders for its latest home camera, the Home View Outdoor. Designed by Yves Béhar, the weatherproof camera provides you with day and night security outside your home and ties in with the rest of the Hive ecosystem if that's your smart home platform of choice.

Unlike its indoor predecessor, the new Outdoor cam is rated IP66 for dust and water resistance and can operate in temperatures from -4°F to 113°F.

With the Hive View Outdoor, you can stream any time in 1080p HD to your smartphone with a 130-degree wide angle lens and up to 8x digital zoom.

The camera detects motion and sound and can automatically start recording and save that footage for you to view. You can also get notifications delivered to you so you know immediately of any goings on around your home. Recordings are saved in the cloud for 24 hours for free and can be downloaded to your devices locally within that time if you need to keep them for longer. There's also two-way audio built-in so you can speak to whoever is at your door via the Hive app.

In terms of price and features, the new Hive cam is comparable with Ring's Stick-Up Security Camera. Ring's offering, however, ties in more closely with the Amazon Echo ecosystem (being an Amazon brand, after all).

When it is released on December 10, the Hive View Outdoor will retail for $199. Pre-orders can be placed now direct at Hive and will save you 20%.
