LaCie’s new portable SSDs use USB-C for super fast transfer speeds

Compact and powerful.

LaCie, a premium brand with specialty storage drives like the LaCie Porsche and LaCie Rugged, has announced a new lineup of USB-C portable solid state drives. The drives are available for pre-order at B&H right now and start as low as $114.99 for the 500GB. You can also upgrade to the 1TB capacity for $249.99 or the 2TB version with a starting price of $509.99.

The port uses a USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C interface. The SSDs will have read/write speeds of 540 MB/s and 500 MB/s respectively. Compare that to the Samsung T5 portable SSD, which has read/write speeds of 540 MB/s. Not only can you transfer even large files super fast, but the connection is quick enough you can edit content directly from the drive. LaCie says the SSD could work as a scratch disc for media editors. It comes with the LaCie Toolkit Software Suite, a three-year Seagate Rescue Data Recovery Plan, and one month of Adobe Creative Cloud All Apps.

The SSD is pre-formatted to work with both Apple and Windows computers, and LaCie backs it up with a three-year limited warranty. It is also drop resistant up to two meters, so you don't have to worry much about butterfingers if you're traveling with it. The drives come with USB-C and USB-C to USB-A cables.

Right now other competitors like the SanDisk Extreme portable SSDs run for a bit less in cost, especially at the larger capacities. The 2TB SanDisk Extreme is only $390 on Amazon. Expect LaCie to catch up quickly though, if it wants a piece of the market.
