Why you should unplug from your tech this holiday season

The holidays are a time for family and good cheer, and technology can often get in the way.

Technology is rampant around the holidays, whether it’s gifts or the technology we’re using to make the holiday easier and/or more special (like smart speakers, smart lights, new phones, whatever). But that same wonderful technology that keeps me in a job and makes life so much easier can hinder and hide the true meaning of the holiday season.

Now I don’t mean to be the luddite Grinch of iMore, but I’m surrounded by tech all day, every day, and even as much as I love it, I was fortunate enough to grow up when the internet wasn’t in my pocket (hell, my family didn’t have our own computer until I was 15). I remember the simple joy of opening gifts on Christmas morning and then simply sitting around the rest of the day enjoying time with my family and helping to cook dinner and all that fun stuff.

Point is: while giving and receiving gifts is awesome and using tech to make the holiday sea…

Android vendors comment on #iPhoneSlow despite their ugly history of benchmark cheating

Samsung, HTC, LG, and others have issued statements saying they don’t throttle phones with older batteries. Yet these same companies have been caught throttling for every app but specific benchmarks, so…

Apple handled informing customers about the changes made by iOS 10.2.1 to iPhone performance and power management badly. The company has since apologized for that and laid out the steps it will take to make things right.

That includes a far better explanation of what’s going on and why. From Apple Support:

With a low battery state of charge, a higher chemical age, or colder temperatures, users are more likely to experience unexpected shutdowns. In extreme cases, shutdowns can occur more frequently, thereby rendering the device unreliable or unusable. iOS 10.2.1 (Released January 2017) includes updates for previous models of iPhone to prevent them from unexpectedly shutting down. This includes a feature for iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, and iPhone SE to d…

No, your iPad isn’t affected by #iPhoneSlow. Here’s why!

Apple is throttling iPhone performance to maintain battery life and prevent unexpected shutdowns. Do iPad owners have to worry about the same thing?

iOS 10.2.1 added battery health to the list of things included in the advanced power management system on iPhone. Flash forward and, after customers complained about excessive performance issues, Apple is now offering battery replacements at a reduced price and will update iOS to provide better insight into battery health. But what about iPad? Should iPad customers also be worried about performance throttling or battery health?

In a word: No.

What you need to know about Apple’s $29 battery replacement program

Why aren’t iPads affected by Apple’s power management throttling?

Because Apple hasn’t added them to the same battery health-based power management system.

From Apple Support:

With a low battery state of charge, a higher chemical age, or colder temperatures, users are more likely to experience unexpected shutdowns. In extr…
