Removing pre-installed apps in iOS 10 doesn’t ’delete’ them entirely, but there’s a good reason for that

One of the most talked-about features coming to iOS 10 is the ability to uninstall Apple's pre-installed apps. The company will let you uninstall 26 stock apps, and should you wish to use them again, you can reinstall the pre-loaded apps from the App Store.

Uninstalling the apps will remove them from the home screen on your iPhone or iPad and delete all the associated user data, but as the apps are integrated into iOS 10, the application binaries will remain intact. Craig Federighi shed more light on the uninstall process on The Talk Show Live (via TechCrunch).

To a regular user, there won't be any difference when they uninstall any of the 26 pre-loaded apps, but as they're part of the signed binary, some elements cannot be fully removed. As detailed by Apple, these are the apps that can be uninstalled in iOS 10:

  • Calculator
  • Calendar
  • Compass
  • Contacts

  • Find My Friends
  • Home
  • iBooks
